Oshawa Campus FAQs
- Is the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) a recognized university in Canada?
Yes! UOIT is a fully accredited institution with university programming at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- How close is Oshawa to Toronto?
Travelling to downtown Toronto via public transit (go train, bus, etc.) will take you approximately 40 minutes. The benefit of living in Oshawa is that you are very close to Toronto but you do not have the expensive cost of living.
- How do I apply?
Visit the Student Application Form and complete the application form and we will respond via email with the next steps.
- Can I work while I study at CultureWorks?
Unfortunately, students who are in Canada to study ESL are not permitted to work. Once you have been a student at UOIT for six months, you will be eligible to apply for a work permit. You may also be eligible for one of the many paid co-op programs that exist at UOIT.
- Do I have to write TOEFL?
No! Once you have received a conditional university acceptance through CultureWorks, you will be expected to complete our High-Advanced Level. You will not be required to write TOEFL or any other English proficiency exam.
- Do I have to start from the first level?
No! At the time of application, you will complete an assessment test via email. The test will help to determine your starting level in the ESL program. We have four levels. Each level takes 12 weeks to complete. Unfortunately we cannot estimate your starting level based on your TOEFL or IELTS scores.
- Can I take part-time or evening courses?
Due to the intensive nature of the CultureWorks program, students only have the option of taking full-time courses.
- Do you have a beginner course?
At this time, CultureWorks does not operate a beginner course. Students must be at the Intermediate level to start.
- When can I start university?
CultureWorks graduates have the opportunity to enter UOIT in September, January, or May.
- Does CultureWorks have scholarships?
Yes. CultureWorks awards scholarships each term to the student who obtains the highest grade average from his or her level of study.
At the undergraduate level, CultureWorks also contributes to international student bursaries and scholarships. We donate 10% of net profits to student awards.
